Troubleshooting Issues Using the J1 Log File
Important
Information and features vary according to the roles to which you belong and the permissions associated with those roles. For more information, contact your module manager or your campus support team.
J1 Web creates a log file that can be used to help your support team and Jenzabar Support identify problems and troubleshoot issues. The log file is created using NLog, an open source logging tool (https://github.com/nlog/nlog/wiki) that your school may already be using for JICS, and Desktop web and client services logging.
To help resolve sign in issues, this J1 Web log file is referenced in the automated email notifications your support team receives when a user has a sign in issue.
Accessing
Available in the folder where your school has Jenzabar installed (e.g., C:\ProgramData\Jenzabar\J1 Web\Logs)
Available for the Advising, Common, Financial Aid Manager, and Registration modules on the J1 Web Review Application Logs page
Configuring
The log file is automatically added to the folder where your school has Jenzabar installed (e.g., C:\ProgramData\Jenzabar\J1 Web\Logs); however, NLog configuration options allow you to change this location, and to set up different log file formats and severity levels. Detailed information on how to configure the NL.config file is available online:
Changing the default file location and opting to have logging information written to a database, sent as an email message, written to an Event Viewer log, etc. can be found in the target information for NLog: https://github.com/nlog/nlog/wiki/Targets
Setting up different targets according to the level of severity can be found in the log levels information for NLog: https://github.com/nlog/nlog/wiki/Log-levels
Updating the configuration file such as change or add logging targets, set up filtering criteria, change the log file name format, etc, can be found in the configuration file information for NLog: https://github.com/nlog/nlog/wiki/Configuration-file
Using the Log File to Resolve User Login Issues
Depending upon the configurations at your school, when a user encounters an issue signing in to J1 Web, an email is sent to the designated support address with a brief description of the issue and an associated log number. The log number can located in the Web log file and provide more details about when and why the issue occurred.
