IPEDS Occupational Activity Definitions

Use this page to manage IPEDS occupational activity definitions. IPEDS is the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System of the US Department of Education (DOE). Some definitions are provided in default data, but you can add others.

Desktop Location

You can manage these definitions in Desktop, too, on the IPEDS Occupational Activity Definition window. Changes made in J1 Web take effect in Desktop, too, and vice versa.

Database Location

The definitions are stored on the IPEDS Occupational Activity Definition table (ipeds_occ_act_definition.ipeds_occ_act_cde).

The definitions are used in IPEDS reporting and in Desktop in the HR module on the Organization Positions window. There you assign IPEDS Occupational Activity Definitions to your school's various employee positions.

  • Code: Up to 6 characters. Required. Appears with Description in drop-downs.

  • Description: Up to 256 characters. Required. Appears with Code in drop-downs.

  • Active: Defaults to Yes. Required.

Permission to manage IPEDS ethnic / race value definitions is available in these roles:

  • Registrar

  • Registration Module Manager

The permission required is "Can manage IPEDS occupational activity definitions".

  1. From the Registration Administration hub, click Hub options.

  2. Click Manage Definitions, and select IPEDS occupational activity definitions. The IPEDS Occupational Activity Definitions page opens.

  3. To filter the definitions, enter a phrase in the Quick Filters field. To remove a filter, click its Remove icon Remove Icon.

  4. To sort the definitions, click the arrows at the head of the column you want to sort on.

  5. If the Expand icon Expand Icon is there, click it to see hidden columns.

  1. Click the Create definitions button. The Create IPEDS Occupational Activity Definitions pop-up appears.

  2. In Code, enter up to 6 characters. Required.

  3. In Description, enter up to 256 characters. Required.

  4. Active defaults to Yes, but you can select No to make the definition unavailable in drop-downs.

  5. Click Create and close or Save and create another.

  1. Click the Edit icon Edit Icon on the row of a definition. The Edit IPEDS Occupational Activity Definition pop-up opens.

  2. Code is not editable.

  3. You can edit Description. Up to 256 characters. Required.

  4. Active is a Yes/No drop-down. If you select No, the definition is unavailable in drop-downs.

  5. Click Update.

  1. Select the checkboxes next to the rows you want to export.

  2. From the Options drop-down, select Download to Excel. The Download to Excel pop-up opens.

  3. Select options for the Excel format and data columns.

  4. Click Download. Your .xlsx or .zip file is saved in the file location that you have set in your browser settings.

If a definition is already in use, then some information or process depends on it, so it can't be deleted.
