Jenzabar SONIS UUID Photo File Names

Overview

The UUID Photo File Names update provides an added layer of automatic security for schools who wish to activate the feature. Jenzabar SONIS version 3.4, Build 26849 includes a script that renames all user profile photo files to a randomized 35-digit string of characters. This ensures that photos are not named in such a way that viewing the file name would provide additional information about the user. For example, some files may have been previously named using all or a portion of the depicted user's SONIS ID number, name, or birthdate. Activating the UUID Naming feature ensures that all future uploads will be automatically given randomized names as well.

Activating UUID feature

To turn the UUID Photo File Names option on, navigate to the System Variables page under the Systems menu. Scroll down to the UUID Photo Names checkbox and ensure that it's checked. Click Submit to save the change.

Keep in mind that activating this option will only change how future uploads are handled. It will not rename previously uploaded image files.

UUID Naming

Once the UUID feature has been activated, all uploaded profile pictures will be automatically renamed as part of the upload process. In the example below, the photo name includes a portion of the student's name and birthdate.

As the photo is uploaded, the file name is converted to a randomized UUID string.
