Connections in J1 Web Student Success
Connections are relationships (as defined on the Relationship Type Definitions page on the Campus-wide Definitions hub) that apply to Student Success. They're the relationships students have with staff members, such as instructors, advisors, coaches, residence staff, and student success administrators.
Connections are relationships, but in shorthand, we say the the staffers are connections. For example, we might say that a student named Juana has Professor Liu and Coach Akim as connections.
Student Success administrators use the Connections page to manage students' connections. As an administrator, you can view, edit, add, and remove connections, and you can download connection information.
Connections vs. Connection Types
Connections are the people (like Coach Akim). Connection Types are the kind of relationship they have with the student, such as Coach, Instructor, and so on.
Connection Types are defined on the Set Up Connection Types page. A staff member can have more than one type of connection to a student. Coach Akim might be Juana's coach, instructor, and advisor.
Where Connections Are Used
Early Alert Form: Users submitting an alert select a Connection Type. That makes a record of their relationship to the student as the submitter of the alert.
Note
A connection type is available in the Connection Type drop-down if its "Display on Early Alert Form" checkbox is selected on the Set Up Connections window.
Alert Tracking page: Each alert on the list includes the Submitted By / Connection Type field. This is the Connection Type the submitter selected on the Early Alert form.
An alert's Summary page, Student Details tab, Connections block: The block lists all the student's connections. The staff member's name and ID are a link to their information details pop-up.
Database Location
Connection Type definitions (Advisor, Coach, Instructor, etc.) are stored in the RelationshipTypeDefinition table because they're relationship types that are available in Student Success.
A relationship type's availability for use in Student Success (where it's called a Connection Type) is stored in the RelationshipTypeModules table.
The connection itself (a particular student's connection with a particular advisor or instructor, for example) is stored in the Relationship table.
Permissions
Permissions for people with Connections to a student to access the student's alerts are in the Access by Connection role (and roles made from it).
To have access to a student's alert:
The user must have a connection with the student on the Connections page.
The user must be in the Access by Connection role (or a role made from it).
The role must be associated with the user's connection type to that student.
The role must be associated with the alert type of the particular alert.

Data Sets
Like many list pages in Jenzabar One Web, you can view the list of students on the Connections page by data sets. Data sets for Connections would be various sets of students organized into groups your school finds useful. You might have a first-year undeclared major group, for example.
Note
Data sets are created by your school's IT team on the Data Sets page in the Campus-Wide Definitions hub. Ask them to create the data sets you need.

FAQ
A connection type is a category of connections, such as Advisor, Instructor, Coach, or Student Success Administrator.
A connection is the particular relationship between a specific student and a specific person in one of the connection types. For example, a student and their primary advisor, or a student and their calculus instructor.
When you deselect the Use in Student Success checkbox, the relationship type is no longer available in Student Success. (It's still an active Relationship Type in the Campus-wide Definitions hub.)
Note
If a Connection Type is currently in use in Student Success, you can't deselect it.
If a relationship type is set as inactive (that is, the Active toggle switch is set to No), then it doesn't appear on the Set Up Connection Types pop-up.
Yes, but they must be a different connection type. For example, a student could have one connection with a person as an advisor, and another connection with the same person as a coach.
In most cases, no, if you have a connection type in Student Success, you want it available on the Early Alert form. But if there's a connection type that you want to discontinue, you might deselect "Display on Early Alert Form" so that it's not available when new alerts are created. Because "Use in Student Success" is still selected, that connection type is preserved in existing alerts.
