Managing Permissions for the Blog Feature

When configuring this feature, you can specify which roles can do each of the following:

  • Post blog items

  • Administer the feature instance

  • Comment on blog items

You can grant the first two permissions from the Access screen. You can also control commenting permissions using the Setup menu.

Note that there are no global feature operations for the Blog feature. What this means is that any user with permission to display a page hosting the feature instance can display the instance and any Blog posts that have not been restricted by authors.

Allowing Roles to Post Blog Items & Access the Setup Menu

For each feature instance, you can specify who is allowed to post blog items and use the Setup menu, as described below.

Post Blog Items

This permission also lets a user modify and delete their own posts. The exact name of this permission is Can Add, Edit, and Delete Own Posts.

Database Reference

Data entered into your site’s Blog feature instances is stored in the main JICS database, in the tables with the ICS_News prefix.

This permission lets the user control many aspects of the feature instance—that is, the role will have permission to complete any of the following tasks:

The exact name of this permission is Can Administer Portlet. Note, however, that if you want to give a role greater administrative permissions, this can only be done by giving the role the Can Admin privilege for the context, which is a much bigger privilege overall (as described in the Allow a Role to Administer a Context section).

To allow roles to post blog items or access the Setup menu:

  1. Log in to the portal as a member of the Administrators role or as someone with Can Admin privileges for the appropriate context. Navigate to the page that contains the Blog feature instance that you wish to modify.

  2. Click the wrench icon in the upper-right corner of the page.

    The admin bar displays.

  3. Click the Access link in the admin bar.

The system displays the Access page, which lists all the roles defined for this context and all the global roles. Roles with access to the page are highlighted in green. Roles with no access to the page are shaded gray.

  4. Locate the role that should be able to post items or administer the feature instance, and take one of the following steps:

    • If the role is highlighted in green, the role already has permission to view the page. Click the role to display a pop-up window that lists the permissions available in each feature.

    • If the role is shaded gray, the role does not have access to view the page. You must first grant the role access to the page before you grant permissions. To do so, click the role and then click the Hidden button to change it to Visible. Now that the role can view the page, the screen refreshes to list the permissions available in each feature.

  5. Under the list of permissions for the Blog feature, click the button next to the Can Administer Portlet permission to change the setting to Yes.

By default, no roles are allowed to comment on blog posts. What this means is that if the author of a post enables commenting, the Discuss link will be active on the post, but users who click through will not be able to add comments. To resolve this, you can configure the feature instance to specify that some or all roles can comment.

  1. Log in to the portal as a member of the Administrators role or as someone with Can Admin privileges for the appropriate context. Navigate to the Blog feature instance and maximize it.

  2. Click the Setup link.

The system displays the Setup screen.

  3. In the Contents Permissions section, select the roles that should be allowed to comment.

  4. Click Save.
