What Can You Copy?

The Copy Course Materials feature copies the following:

  • Materials that you have set up within the context of any course section.

  • Any context-specific roles that have been created. Depending on the copying method you choose, the copy function can also copy the permissions associated with these roles.

You can copy any page and any feature instance, though the exact specifics of how features are copied varies depending on what type of feature it is. This section describes the specifics of how certain commonly used features are copied. For guidance on other features, refer to the text displayed on the Copy Course Materials screen.

Note

Note that there is no scenario in which you can copy data about a particular student. The copy feature assumes that the destination course has its own student roster, and any information about particular students is established only after you copy your materials over.

When you copy an instance of the Attendance feature, you copy its settings and permissions but none of its data. That is, the system copies the values you saved on the Attendance - Notification and Attendance Method screen and the ones saved on the Access screen.

Note that you can copy the Attendance feature only in conjunction with the Coursework and Gradebook features. This means that you overwrite all three existing pages and features in the destination context.

When you copy an instance of the Chat feature, you copy its permissions (the selections made on the Access screen). Chat data is not copied.

When you copy an instance of the Roster feature, you copy its permissions (the selections made on the Access screen). Roster data is not copied.

When you copy an instance of the Coursework feature, the system copies all of your units and assignments, as well as the Coursework permissions settings made in the Context Manager and on the Access screen. Selective-release rules and group-based audience settings are included in copied assignments.

Note that you can copy the Coursework feature only in conjunction with the Attendance and Gradebook features. This means that you overwrite all three existing pages and features in the destination context.

When you copy an instance of the Free-Form Content feature, you copy any elements that have been created (text and images). You also copy its permissions (the selections made on the Access screen).

Recall that the Syllabus and About This Course features are both instance of the Free-Form Content feature—so all of the above applies to them.

When you copy an instance of the Forums feature, you copy its categories and its topics, as well as date settings for topics and posts. You also copy its settings and permissions (the selections made on the Access screen).

You can also choose to copy posts by selecting one of the following options:

  • The first post of any thread started by a faculty member.

  • The first post of any thread (regardless of who started it).

When you copy an instance of the Gradebook feature, the system copies the configuration and settings of your Gradebook feature. This includes specific evaluations that you have created, and your weighting configuration.

You can copy the Gradebook feature only in conjunction with the Attendance and Coursework features. This means you overwrite all three existing pages and features in the destination context.

When you copy an instance of the Readings feature, you copy its sets and any readings that have been defined. You also copy its permissions (the selections made on the Access screen).

When you copy an instance of the Resources feature, you copy its sets and any resources that have been uploaded. You also copy its settings and permissions (the selections made on the Access screen).

Note that the Downloadable Version feature is an instance of the Resources feature, so all of the above applies to it.

In general, with other features, only settings and permissions are copied, not data. For details, go to the Copy Courses Materials feature and proceed as if you are copying selected content only. When you display the details of pages—including the features on each page—the system will display a brief explanation of how each feature would be copied.

The maximum number of courses you can copy to varies depending on your privileges. Refer to the following table for details.
