Adding Content to Online Tests
This chapter describes how to add questions and other content to online test assignments. Using the Test Builder to you can create tests and do any of the following:
Add questions to tests and, optionally, the correct answers, so the system can automatically score the assignment.
Group questions into sections. You can optionally do either of the following:
Configure the section so that its questions are randomly shuffled.
Make the section a question pool—that is, configure the section to randomly display a subset of its questions.
Assign a point value to each question.
Set up automatic feedback that will display when students review their graded tests.
How To
After you create an online assignment, the system automatically displays the Test Builder. If you navigate away and need to go back later, use the following procedure.
Note
It is possible to edit an assignment in Test Builder even if the assignment is already open and students have begun taking it. However, making major changes after students have begun taking a test is not recommended.
Navigate to the appropriate Coursework feature instance.
Click the name of the assignment that you wish to edit in the Test Builder.
The system displays the assignment overview.
If the test is already open to its audience, the system may already list a grade for some students.
Click the link labeled Go to the Test Builder. (If the due date is in the future, this link will be in the action bar. If not, look in the More menu.)
The system opens the Test Builder view of the assignment.
From here, you can do any of the following:
Add, edit, and manage questions.
Change the point values of the test’s questions by clicking Edit all points.
Add, edit, and delete sections.
Import questions.
Preview tests.
Modify settings related to the assignment’s sections, such as whether any sections will shuffle questions.
After adding a question, design the answers (such as selecting the answer type) and provide automatic feedback (optional).
Warning Pop-Up Window If Test Question Edited after Student Submission
On the Test Builder Add/Edit Question screen in Coursework, the Test Modification Warning pop-up window indicates if a student has started at least one attempt for a specific test assignment. This pop-up window is displayed whenever the Faculty or Admin user clicks either the Save and add another button or the Save and return to Test Builder button.

The text in this pop-up window explains: "This test is in progress and/or has attempts logged. Changes saved may affect test results. Do you want to continue?"
Click the Save button to continue the process and save the question as usual. The user either goes to the next question (if the Save and add another button is clicked) or returns to the main Test Builder screen (if the Save and return to Test Builder button is clicked). Click the Cancel button to go back to the Add/Edit Question view without saving any changes.
If you select the "Don't show this warning again for this test" checkbox before you click Save, the warning pop-up will no longer appear for this user's session. (After the user logs out and back in, the warning pop-up will appear again. It will also appear again for other assignments.) If you click Cancel after selecting the checkbox, the selection is not saved.
FAQ
A student who is in the audience for an online assignment will not be able to take the test until all of the following are true:
The assignment is open for that student.
The test has been “built”, meaning that:
The test has at least one question in a non-extra-credit section. Unless the test is an extra-credit assignment, not all questions can be extra credit. You can check this by opening the assignment in Test Builder and reviewing the summary of questions. Extra-credit questions are marked with a medal icon.
Every question has a point value. All questions must have a point value. To check this open the test in the Test Builder—if any questions lack a point value, the system will display a yellow warning and highlight questions that need point values.
