Working with Linked Assignments

At times you may want to make a copy of an assignment so that it can be reused or shared. This chapter explains how to link assignment copies so that updates to the original can also be applied to any copies. It also explains a number of other options for managing linked assignments.

When creating a copy of an assignment, you have the option to link the copy to the original version so that the copy can be kept up to date with any changes made to the original. You will see this option anytime you take one of the following actions:

  • Importing an assignment into a course from the File Cabinet

  • Saving an assignment to the File Cabinet

  • Pushing an assignment to the File Cabinets of other faculty members

  • Copying a course using the Copy Courses feature (all assignments in the new course will be linked to their corresponding versions in the original)

When you take one of these actions, the system will ask if you would like to enable assignment linking.

To link the new copy of the assignment with the original residing in the File Cabinet, you would simply leave the Enable assignment linking checkbox selected. If you deselect this checkbox, the assignment copy will not be linked with the original.

You can tell if an assignment has linked copies from the Edit Assignment screen, where the Linked options area will indicate if any copies exist in users’ File Cabinets or other course sections.

If an assignment is a copy that is linked to its original, the Edit Assignment screen will indicate this in the Linked options area. This area will also provide several options for managing the copy.

In your File Cabinet, the Linked Assignment Options column will indicate which assignments are linked. A linked assignment will have a More info link and Unlink link in this column. If changes have been made to the original, you will also see an Update link.
