CBE Competency Definition Window

Use this window to define competencies for the Competency Based Education (CBE) feature.

To set up Competency Based Education (CBE), you first turn it on and configure it in the Registration Configuration window. You then define CBE types, categories, levels, and learning outcomes. After that, you come to this window to define the competencies themselves.

When you create a competency, you assign it a type—either Competency (the smallest type) or Unit (which can contain several Competencies). You also set its maximum duration and credits, and you assign its default maximum category level. You can select an Advising Requirement Code (ARC), and give the competency a description to display on transcripts.

After you create a competency, you can assign learning outcomes to it. (You created them in the CBE Learning Outcomes Definition window.)

When you finish defining competencies and assigning learning outcomes to them, then users can begin assigning competencies to courses and sections in J1 Web.

Be Aware of the Display Name

By default, the Competency Based Education feature's display name is "CBE", but your school can rename it. The name appears in many windows, pages, and drop-downs. It refers both to the Competency Based Education feature and to the elements (like types, levels, units, and competencies) that you assign to courses and sections.

The names of windows, field labels, and values in drop-downs may include "CBE" by default. When you change this display name, it changes those window names, field labels, and drop-down values. In documentation, we still call it "CBE".

Which windows should I set up in which order for CBE?

A competency is the finest-grain kind of skill or knowledge that your school can evaluate in a CBE section. You can also evaluate a unit, or you can group competencies into units. If a unit has competencies assigned to it, the unit is the parent, and the competencies are the children.

More generally, it's sometimes convenient to refer to both units and competencies as competencies, meaning loosely "the skills and knowledge to be evaluated." Your school will work out its terminology.

"Unit" and "Competency" are default terms, but you can rename them on this window. Whatever you call them, we still call them units and competencies in the documentation.

How To

1. On the CBE tab, click the Add button to add a row.

2. Give it a name and description.

3. Select the Type from the drop-down. (A Competency is the finest-grain element. A Unit can contain a group of Competencies. The Competencies are children of the Unit.)

4. Select the Max Duration—the number of days a student can work on the CBE element.

5. Select the Max Category Level Default. This is the maximum category level available for this CBE element. (But, if you've allowed it on the Registration Configuration window, users can change the level on individual courses, sections, or student course histories.)

6. Assign the number of Credits for the CBE element.

7. Select an Advising Requirement Code (ARC). (They're not required, but they're helpful.)

8. Assign the Display Order. By default, the element is active and displayed in drop-downs.

9. By default, Show On Transcript is selected. Deselect it if you wish.

10. Enter a Transcript Description.

11. With your row selected in the CBE group, go to the Learning Outcomes tab, and click the Add button there. The Add Learning Outcomes window pops up.

a. Select the checkboxes for any outcomes you want to associate with the element.

b. Click OK. The Add Learning Outcomes window closes. The CBE Competency Definition window now has the selected outcomes.
