The Course tab on the Courses window contains extensive information regarding a Course section. It is divided into four subtabs.
If you select Academic Credit Varies by Division on the Registration Configuration window, the words "Credit Hours" will be replaced with the label you created on the Division Definition window for the Credit Hours column/field header.
These are the subtabs, group boxes, and columns:
The Grading subtab allows you to maintain grading periods for a particular course in a particular term. The values you set here override—for the selected course section only—the term-level grading period values that apply to all courses in a term. (Those term-level values are maintained on the Year/Term/Subterm window.)
The grading subtab works in conjunction with the Year/Term/Subterm window and with the J1 Web Registration module. In J1 Web, Midterm and Final grading periods are available by default, and schools can add more periods.
When you create new course sections (from scratch, by copying, or by creating new terms or subterms), the default midterm and final grading periods are assigned to them automatically. The Grade Scale and Credit Type default from Catalog Master if you create a section using Catalog Lookup, but they default from Section Master if you create the section from scratch.
Dates are not automatically assigned to the grading periods because grading periods don't usually need their own dates. By default, grading periods are open based on start and end dates of Grade Entry and Grade Blackout. The system uses the dates it finds first, searching in this sequence:
§ Courses window | Course tab | Grading subtab
§ Year Term Subterm window | Year/Term/Subterm tab | Grading Periods subtab
§ Year Term Subterm window | Year/Term tab | Grading Periods subtab
If you want your new section to have its own grading period dates, different from other sections in that term, you can enter them, as well as Grade Blackout start and end dates, on this tab.
For courses that already exist, and to add grading periods other than the default midterm and final, you need to set up grading periods.
To set up grading periods, try this three-step approach:
Step | Location |
All courses in all terms
Set up default Midterm and Final grading periods for all courses in all Year/Terms and Year/Term/Subterms. |
J1 Web Registration Settings page. Click the Create grading periods button. |
Per term Assign the Grade Entry and Grade Blackout dates per term. |
J1 Desktop Year Term Subterm window | Year/Term or Year/Term/Subterm tab | Grading Periods subtab |
Per course
Edit the dates for a particular course in the selected term or subterm only if they need to be different from the other courses in the year and term or subterm. Add grading periods if either · you need a different Grade Scale or Credit type for the selected course, or · the term or subterm has multiple final or midterm grading periods. For J1 Web Grade Entry, a course can only have one midterm and one final grading period assigned. |
J1 Desktop Courses or Courses (Non-Traditional) window | Course tab | Grading subtab |
If your school doesn't have a J1 Web Registration license, you can skip the first step; instead, you'll set up grading periods by term in the Year Term Subterm window in the second step.
Users with permission can use this subtab to edit, add, and delete grading periods.
· Grading Period is a period assigned to the selected year, term, and course. It's defined on the Grading Period Definition window.
Although it's possible on the J1 Desktop Year Term Subterm window to assign multiple midterm and final grading periods to a term or subterm, the J1 Web Grade Entry page allows only a single midterm and final grading period per course. Therefore, if a term does have multiple midterm or final grading periods, assign a single midterm and final to the course on the J1 Desktop Courses or Courses (Non-Traditional) window | Course tab | Grading subtab.
· Grading Period Type is assigned to each Grading Period. It's defined in the Grading Period Type Definition window.
· You can assign
the Grade Scale and Credit
Type here. This is important if you wish to assign a particular
Grade Scale and Credit Type combination for the course.
In grading periods that use a letter grade, Grade Scale and Credit
Type are mandatory.
· You can enter begin and end dates for Grade Entry and for Grade Blackout if they need to be different from those in other courses in the term or subterm. If you enter a begin or end date, you must enter the other, too.
· You can select the course as a Variable Grading Type Course, and you can click the Add Variable Grading Types to launch the Maintain Variable Grading Types window.
