Major/Minor Definition Window

Each student is associated with a set of codes that represent majors and minors. Valid major and minor codes with their descriptions are defined on the Major/Minor Definition window. You must define a code for each major and minor that may be associated with faculty/staff or past students. This may include majors that are no longer offered or were never available at your organization. Use the radio buttons to indicate if the code represents a Major, Minor, or Both. Codes can be up to 5 characters long, and associated descriptions can be up to 30 characters long.

The way you define codes (examples) may impact data conversion. As you make decisions, consult with the persons who are creating your data conversion programs. Once Registration is implemented, you cannot change codes, since such a change would require a re-conversion of your Registration data, which is not desirable. However, you can add new major and minor codes to the Major Minor Definition table at any time.

·       Majors and minors use the same codes, and these codes are shared among offices. If there is a minor that cannot be taken as a major, you must still include it on the list of valid major and minor codes.

·       If you want a major code to display in the Major drop-down list on the Majors/Certifications tab of the Program Definition window, you must select the Internal checkbox and the Major or Both radio buttons for that major code on the Major/Minor Definition window.

·       If you want a minor code to display in the Minor drop-down list on the Majors/Certifications tab of the Program Definition window, you must select the Internal checkbox and the Minor or Both radio buttons for that minor code on the Major/Minor Definition window.

User-defined columns are hidden in this window; however, you can display them by using ELITE PAINT (right-click in the window and choose ELITE PAINT).

·        You must select a CIP code for each major for which the U. S. Department of Education requires you to report statistics.
