Prerequisite, Corequisite, and Prohibited Courses Checking

For selected courses, you can specify that a prerequisite course or series of courses must be successfully completed before a student can enroll in the selected course. If a specific course must be taken concurrently with another course, it is known as a corequisite. If certain courses were taken previously, they can cause a person to be ineligible to enroll in some other courses. These relationships are known as prohibited courses.

After the prerequisite, corequisite, and prohibited course requirements have been entered into J1, Registration uses this information to determine whether students are eligible to enroll in courses. If a student has not met the designated requirement for a course, J1 will generate an informational message indicating that the student has not met the requirements for the course.

To check for prerequisite, corequisite, and prohibited courses, you need to:

·       Configure prerequisite, corequisite, and prohibited courses checking on the Registration Configuration window:

o     Include Previous Terms in Corequisite Checking

o     Prereq/Coreq/Prohibited Courses

·       Define the courses on the Prerequisite, Corequisite, and Prohibited Courses window.

If you base the checking process on requirements, you must have Advising Requirement Codes on all Student Course History rows and on all courses on the Section Master and Schedule window for which you want prerequisite, corequisite, and prohibited checking to occur.

When you register a student for a course and save on the Register by Student window, J1 will complete the following process:

·       A search is performed for prerequisite courses to see if the course prerequisite was met previously. An in-progress course should only meet a prerequisite requirement if that courses's end date is less than the begin date of the course requiring the prerequisite.

·       A search is performed for prohibited courses in all years and terms on the Student Course History.

·       A search is performed for corequisite courses in either the current year and term or all years and terms (depending on the configuration).

·       An error message is generated if a prerequisite, corequisite, or prohibited course(s) exists for the selected course.

You may override this error message if you are given rights on the Registration Permissions window. When you override the error message, J1 flags the Prerequisites, Corequisite, or Prohibited column on the Courses tab of the Register by Student window. If you right-click on the row of the flagged course, you may select to view the course(s). If a course requires that a prerequisite or corequisite be taken, you may register the student for the needed class and
E will remove the Prerequisite or Corequisite Flag from the Student Course History for the current year and term.

Sequence Number

The sequence number is a code used to distinguish separate records in the Degree History table. When entering multiple degree records for the same individual, you must assign a separate sequence code for each item.

If you are working with the Prerequisite table, the sequence number is used to distinguish the course(s) which may be taken as alternatives. The sequence numbers for prerequisite courses are J1-assigned. The sequence numbering is also used for corequisite and prohibited courses.

If BIO-443 has a sequence number 1 with a BIO-310 prerequisite course AND a sequence number 2 with a BIO-330 prerequisite course, a student may choose to take ONE or the OTHER and is not required to take both prerequisite courses.
