IPEDS Type

Use the IPEDS Type column to determine whether the course is identified by clock hours, credit hours or if the hours will not be counted towards your IPEDS reports (Do Not Add Hours). The value selected for the Catalog table will be copied to the Section Master table when courses are created from the Catalog. By default, new courses use the Credit Hours value in this column. On the Section Master table, the value in the column is used to determine whether to count credit hours or clock hours for students registered in that course.

When you “capture” student data during the IPEDS process, students who have registrations in the selected years, terms, the selected credit types, and with a record type of Local Detail or Local Summary are selected. If the course’s IPEDS Type is Credit Hours, then the credit hours of that Student Course History record are added to that student’s Credit Hours bucket. If the course’s IPEDS Type is Clock Hours, then the clock hours of that Student Course History record are added to that student’s Clock Hours bucket. Since it is very unlikely that a Local Summary registration will have an associated Section Master row, the Credit Hours are counted.

Any student may have values in both the Credit Hours and Clock Hours columns for the 12-Month Enrollment Report; however, one registration is counted in only one of them.

Partial clock hours for courses that have end dates outside the end dates of the years and terms that are selected in the process are not counted.
