One of the six types of charges is the Term Charges for Courses. This type of charge is attached to any fee code that has a Charge Type of C. These charges are generally based on specific courses that have additional fees associated with them. Lab fees and material fees are the most common course charges, but some organizations charge tuition on a course-by-course basis.
Just like other types of charges, course charges are entered on the Charge Definition table and Charge Table. You may only have several course charges for the few courses that have lab or material fees (such as Physics, Pottery, Painting, Photography, etc.), or you may not have any tuition charges (Charge Type = S) but solely use course fees to build the tuition charges for students.
If you have relatively few course charges, you probably use the course components and assess the fee when a student registers for a course with a designated charge.

The courses PHYS 412, ART 250, and ART 405 all have lab/material fees. The course fees would be set up to look at the variables containing PHYS or ART, plus the course numbers. When a match is found for any of these courses, the charge is made. |
If you have a large number of courses that carry charges, you may use the method described above; however, you may find entering each course charge tedious. Instead, you can use a user-defined column on the Section Master table that could contain a code designating the fee.

All courses with a code of 1 could have a fee of $40; all courses with a code of 2 could have a fee of $65, etc. |
In either case, you need to define which columns on the system will be checked to determine the course charge. These are called variables, and the variable that can be used to determine course charges can come from the following tables:
