System administrators create and maintain individual database accounts for each J1 Desktop application user. Application users must enter a username and password via a login prompt. This is used to authenticate the user in SQL Server. All application users, application groups, and membership to application groups must be created and maintained manually in J1 Desktop Security & Permissions to grant access to windows and functions within the J1 Desktop application.

Active Directory authenticates J1 Desktop application users. System administrators create and maintain J1 Desktop application users, groups, and group memberships in Active Directory and then grant window and function permissions to those application groups using J1 Desktop Security & Permissions . A SQL Server Agent job automatically synchronizes the information in Active Directory with information in J1 Desktop Security & Permissions . This is much easier to setup and manage and keeps system administrators from having to create and maintain individual database accounts.

There are two options for integrated authentication:

·       Integrated does not present a login prompt to the application user. When the application user starts the J1 Desktop application, the application silently authenticates the user's Windows credentials against Active Directory.

·       Integrated_LoginPrompt provides additional security and always presents the application user with a login prompt when starting the application. The user must enter their Windows credentials (including a domain). Once the Windows credential are entered and authenticated, the J1 Desktop application is available to the application user.

Both options utilize active directory for authenticating users.
