To allow the system to add international students and exchange visitors into the SEVIS tracking system in J1 Desktop, you should ensure that the following is set up in the J1 tables:
1. In the Maintain Configuration Table window, enter values for the following rows:

2. In the Major/Minor Definition window, select the Requires English checkbox for the majors and minors that will be used for collecting data in the International Students and Exchange Visitors window.
3. In the Certification Definition window, select the Requires English checkbox for the certifications that will be used for collecting data in the International Students and Exchange Visitors window.
4. In the Relationship Definition window, create relationships or modify existing relationships for SEVIS Elements (see table below) that will be used for collecting data in the International Students and Exchange Visitors window.
5. The following table illustrates correct relationship definitions so that on the International Students and Exchange Visitors window, the function executed by the Create New Records and Update Existing Records buttons correctly creates and updates in the SEVIS tables:
o One or more records for Student Dependents
o One or more records for Exchange Visitor Dependents
o One record for a CPT Employer for Students
o One record for an OPT Employer for Students

6. In the Users window in Tasklist, give the appropriate User ID a SEVIS User ID, which will be used in the International Students and Exchange Visitors window to identify this user as the person officially reporting the information about this student/exchange visitor.
7. In the SEVIS Employers and Sites window, define CPT and OPT employers and sites of activity.
