Students can be identified with their particular emphasis of study (examples)
Select one of the appropriate radio buttons from the Major/Minor Definition window to indicate if the program is offered as a major, minor, or both at your particular institution.
You should keep the following information in mind as you define your major and minor codes:
· Major and minor codes are shared between several offices. For example, the Admissions office tracks expected majors and minors for incoming students. Consult with each office that uses major and minor codes.
· Majors and minors use the same codes. If there is a minor that cannot be taken as a major, you must still include it on the list of valid major and minor codes.
· Your coding decisions impact data conversion. Consult with the people who are creating your data conversion programs as you make your decisions.
· You must define a code for each major and minor that may be in the Student Master for former students. This may include majors that are no longer offered by your institution.
· The major and minor coding definition may be made only during the implementation of Registration after the system has been implemented, you may not change the codes. You may add new major and minor codes at any time.
For GRS Reporting purposes, majors are used to populate the Majors 1-3 columns on the Degree tab of the Student Information window.
· If a code is assigned as a Major, it will be available in the Major drop-down list.
· If a code is assigned as a Minor, it will be available only in the Minor drop-down list.
· If the code is assigned as Both, it will appear in the Major and in the Minor drop-down lists.
Only Majors and Minors that have the Internal checkbox selected on the Major/Minor Definition window will appear. If the user selects a Major or Minor that is beyond the Begin Date or End Date, a warning will appear; however, the Major or Minor can still be used.
The Major 1 column is used to populate the GRS Beginning Program column on the Student Master Extension window. If the Major 1 and Certification columns are empty, the GRS Beginning Program column will also be empty.
For NSC Reporting purposes, majors are used to populate the Major Course of Study 1 and Major Course of Study 2 columns on the Edit NSC Transmittal Detail Records window. If a code is assigned as a Major, it will be available in the Major drop-down list. Only Majors that have not expired and have the Internal checkbox selected on the Major/Minor Definition window will appear.
