Many organizations, especially community colleges and technical schools/colleges, are seeking ways to serve the nontraditional student population. This trend has resulted in many nontraditional course offerings that follow a unique term. If your organization purchased the Registration module, the Registrar will define subterms.

Courses in the traditional academic fall term may run 16 weeks beginning in August. A nontraditional term may be a set of four-week courses that begin in November. Although these traditional courses are classified as part of the same term as the traditional courses, they are treated separately in administrative functions, such as class lists, grade lists, and course enrollment reports. Therefore, a subterm might be used to group these non-traditional courses. In the example above, the November four-week courses might be coded with N4, which would identify the set of four-week courses that begin in November. You will then be able to run class lists and grade lists for the N4 subterm. |
The subterm code is defined on the Subterm Definition window and can be up to 2 alphanumeric characters. The associated description can be up to 30 alphanumeric characters. This alphanumeric code identifies a subterm (examples). These values are stored in the Subterm Definition table via the Subterm Definition window.

Be sure to code subterms so that they will sort in chronological order (i.e., the codes for Fall should be less than the codes for Spring). In the sorting hierarchy, numbers are greater than letters and columns are sorted AA-ZZ, 01-99. Therefore, Subterm ZZ comes before Subterm 01. |
