Prerequisite, Corequisite, and Prohibited Courses Window

This window allows you to define Prerequisite, Corequisite, and Prohibited Courses using both Course and Non-Course options. This window contains three tabs to manage prerequisites, corequisites, and prohibited courses.

The Registration Configuration window allows prerequisite, corequisite, and prohibited courses to be controlled separately by using either their course code or Advising Requirement Code. Choose the appropriate radio button and, if you are using course codes, identify the number of components. The configuration selected on the Registration Configuration window will be reflected and displayed on the Prerequisite, Corequisite, and Prohibited Courses window.

The Include-In-Progress Courses in Prerequisite/Corquisite/Prohibited Checking checkbox (located in the Registration Controls group box) can also be selected on the Registration Configuration window. This will allow the registration process to check the Student Course History in order to determine if any in-progress courses will meet a prerequisite/corequisite/prohibited requirement.

There may be situations where a non-course requirement (such as a test score, paperwork, or a class level) needs to be identified as a prerequisite/corequisite/prohibited for a course. These requirements can be defined using the Rules Based Update feature. The Update Type of PCP (Non-course Prereg, Coreq, Prohibited) Update Rule must be used for creating non-course prerequisites, corequisites, or prohibited course rule.

How do I...

If the checking process is based on Advising Requirement Codes, the window will display a drop-down list from which you may select the requirements.

If the prerequisite, corequisite and prohibited courses checking is based on course components:

1. Open the Prerequisite, Corequisite, and Prohibited Courses window.

2. To define prerequisites:

a. On the left-hand side of the Prerequisites tab (under Courses), choose Add Row from the right-click or Options menu.

b. Enter the appropriate course components or choose Course Component # (where # equals the number of the component) from the right-click or Options menu.

c. Save the data. The Sequence Number will be generated by J1.

d. On the right-hand side of the Prerequisites tab (under Prerequisite Courses), choose Add Row from the right-click or Options menu.

e. Enter the appropriate course components or choose Course Component # (where # equals the number of the component) from the right-click or Options menu. Repeat this step for each course that is a prerequisite and Save. This step creates an AND prerequisite condition (example).

f. To create an OR prerequisite condition, enter the same course code twice on the left-hand side of the Prerequisite tab, save this data, and then enter the appropriate course(s) on the right-hand side of the tab (example).

3. To define corequisites:

a. Select the Corerequisites tab.

b. On the left-hand side of the Corequisites tab (under Courses), choose Add Row from the right-click or Options menu.

c. Enter the appropriate course components or choose Course Component # (where # equals the number of the component) from the right-click or Options menu.

d. Save the data. The Sequence Number will be generated by J1.

e. On the right-hand side of the Corequisites tab (under Corequisite Courses), choose Add Row from the right-click or Options menu.

f. Enter the appropriate course components or choose Course Component # (where # equals the number of the component) from the right-click or Options menu. Repeat this step for each course that is a corequisite and Save. This step creates an AND corequisite condition.

g. To create an OR corequisite condition, enter the same course code twice on the left-hand side of the Corequisite tab, save this data, and then enter the appropriate course(s) on the right-hand side of the tab.

A Corequisite course needs to be defined twice (example).

4. To define prohibited courses:

a. Select the Prohibited tab.

b. On the left-hand side of the Prohibited tab (under Courses), choose Add Row from the right-click or Options menu.

c. Enter the appropriate course components or right-click and choose Course Component # (where # equals the number of the component).

d. Save the data. The Sequence Number will be generated by J1.

e. On the right-hand side of the Prohibited tab (under Prohibited Courses), choose Add Row from the right-click or Options menu.

f. Enter the appropriate course components or choose Course Component # (where # equals the number of the component) from the right-click or Options menu. Repeat this step for each course that is prohibited and Save. This step creates an AND prohibited courses condition.

g. To create an OR prohibited courses condition, enter the same course code twice on the left-hand side of the Prohibited tab, save this data, and then enter the appropriate course(s) on the right-hand side of the tab

A Prohibited course needs to be defined twice (example).

After you complete the following procedure, a check is made for any Non-Course Prerequisite, Corequisite, or Prohibited requirements you have added to the Course Code or ARC when you register a student.

1. Open the Update Definition window.

a. Choose Add Row from the right-click or Options menu.

b. For the Update Type, enter PCP (Non-course Prereq, Coreq, Prohibited Update Rules).

c. Enter the Update Code (maximum of 4 characters).

d. Enter a Description for the Update Code.

e. Choose Validation from the Process Type drop-down list box. Validation is ALWAYS the Process Type for PCP. The Registration process looks for a 'Y'(Yes) to determine if the student has met the PCP requirement.

2. Open the Update Definition User Access window.

a. Locate the group with which your J1 login is associated.

b. Move the newly created PCP Update Code from the Available Codes column to the Selected Codes column.

3. Open the Update Results and Rules window.

a. Expand the PCP Update Type book.

b. Highlight the Update Code for which you are creating Results and Rules definition.

c. On the Results Definition tab, choose Add Row from the right-click or Options menu.

d. The resulting code will ALWAYS be 'Y' with Update Type PCP because you are only validating (not updating) the data.

4. On the Results Rules Definition tab, create the rules for which you want to "test" the data value. You must do this for each PCP Update Code you created,

5. Open the Prerequisite, Corequisite, and Prohibited Courses window.

a. On the left side of the window (under Courses), locate the Course Code or ARC Code for which you want to create the Prerequisite, Corequisite, Prohibited course.

b. If the Course Code or ARC Code is not already set up in the table, right-click and add a row.

6. After you have added the Course Code or ARC to the Courses die of the window, move to the right side of the window [under Prerequisite Course(s)].

a. Choose Add Row from the right-click or Options menu.

b. Choose Non-course as the Prereq Type.

c. Tab out of the Prereq Type column to move to the Update Code column.

d. In the Update Code column, choose the PCP Update Code that is appropriate for the course prerequisite, corequisite, or prohibited.
