A gift category component 1 is the first of two components that make up a gift category. Component 1 codes are defined by your organization and can be thought of as broad areas into which money given to your organization can be placed. However, they are not as broad as gift sets or designations. Gift category component 1 codes are defined on the Category Component 1 window.
There are no system or program-required rules for how you define these codes; however, your organization may have special reporting considerations. If so, then how you define these codes should be consistent with and reflect those needs. Remember that the system stores them in an alphanumeric column, which means they can contain letters, numbers, and any alphanumeric combination.
It is important to keep the following principles in mind as you are defining these codes.
1. In deciding whether to use numbers, letters, or number/letter combinations, you need to decide the order in which you want these components to appear on a report (or drop-down list when selecting them in the system) and assign them accordingly. The system sorts components numerically and then alphabetically.
2. Another factor to consider is the broadness they offer. You can generate a component 1 report and see the broad categories over which their funds are spread.
3. The examples below can be reassigned to change the order in which the components appear on a report or list. In other words, do you want to see General Funds first? If so, change its code to AAGEN, for example, in the Letters column. Or do you want to see scholarships first? This will dictate the rationale in developing these components.
Below are four types of codes that could be assigned to identify the component 1:
