IPEDS Award Level Definition Window

Use this window to maintain IPEDS Award Levels. Many definitions are provided by default, but your school can create definitions, too.

Where IPEDS Award Levels Are Used

IPEDS Award Levels are assigned to CIP codes on the CIP Definition window, and they're assigned to degrees on the Degree Definition window. IPEDS Award Levels also appear in the IPEDS Completion report.

1A and 1B were added to replace Level 1 in EX 7.4.1 and J1 Desktop 2020.2. Levels marked with 1 are reported as 1B.

1A: Less than 9 semester-hour postsecondary award, certificate or diploma

  • Less than 300 clock hours, or

  • Less than 9 semester or trimester credit hours, or

  • Less than 13 quarter credit hours

1B: 9 to 29 semester-hour postsecondary award, certificate, or diploma

  • 300 - 899 clock hours, or

  • 9 - 29 semester or trimester credit hours, or

  • 13 - 44 quarter credit hours
